Using Animals To Control Duckweed

images17

Duckweed can be a major problem if it is allowed to grow without any restrictions on a small, still pond or lake. Moving water can help to deter the growth of duckweed but in some ponds it is not possible to have moving water. In these cases one option to control duckweed is to use animals that will eat duckweed as a food source. There are many different animals that regularly eat duckweed and that can be introduced to your pond to help contain its growth. Ducks, (obviously), fish, geese, turtles, and other animals are all known to eat duckweed. Having some of these animals living in or around your pond can have a noticeable difference in the surface coverage of duckweed and pond health.

So what animals eat duckweed?

Many tropical and freshwater fish are known to eat duckweed when it is found in their environment. In fact the duck-weed plant is a favorite food source for tilapia and carp fish farmers. Tilapia in particular are a great fish for controlling duckweed growth due to their own fast growth rate, and their voracious appetite for duckweed and other aquatic plants. At the end of the year you can even harvest your Tilapia before your pond freezes for a great fish meal. Before introducing fish to any pond or body of water make sure you check your local rules and regulations, as it is illegal to introduce non-native fish in some areas.

Waterfowl such as ducks and geese can also eat enough duckweed to help to control it, but these animals alone are generally not enough to keep duckweed in check, and often additional methods and/or other animals are needed to keep a pond healthy.

There are also many mammals that make duckweed a major part of their diet. Some North American examples are muskrats, beaver, woodchucks, and other small rodents. Reptiles and amphibians also occasionally eat duckweed. Snakes, turtles, and frogs are all known to eat the duckweed plant. However like waterfowl, these animals are generally not enough to control duckweed by themselves, but when combined with other methods and animals they can be part of a comprehensive pond duckweed control plan.

So if duckweed is taking over your pond, making an ugly, smelly eyesore, consider some natural weed control methods before resorting to more expensive, and potentially harmful chemical treatments.

Fish As Pets Are Great For Your Kids.

images20

Fish as pets are becoming increasingly common in todays society generally because most people lead very busy lives and have little time to dedicate to pets. Whereas the most common pets need a lot of care and attention fish generally need very little and are easy to care for.

The most common pet is that of a dog and whilst we all love them they can be messy, not to mention noisy and smelly! Not only do you have to exercise them, keep them entertained and of course clean all that fur up, but they can also be expensive to keep. Fish on the other hand are the complete opposite. No odor, they do all their own exercising, they entertain themselves and of course no fur to sweep away. This makes caring for fish extremely easy and cheap. Of course you still need to care for your fish in some ways. They will need feeding and the tank will need cleaning, however compared to other pets this should be easy.

Fish for Kids

Fish are also a great pet to introduce to children and can be fun and educational. If your kids are asking you to buy a pet for them then choosing fish as pets is a wonderful way in which you can teach your kids how to care for animals especially if your kids are very young and not experienced in looking after animals.

Your child will be able to easily care for fish with little or no supervision from you and will enjoy the responsibility that comes with caring for a pet. Children love watching brightly colored fish swim continuously in the aquarium especially when it comes to feeding time and they watch the fish all swarm to the surface to get their dinner. Some consider fish as having no personality; you would be surprised to find that most of them do and are very entertaining to watch. And with the new and novel accessories you can now purchase for your fish tank, your kids will soon be glued to the glass and entertained for hours.

Fish For Life

Once your tank is established and your fish are settled into their new home you can then start to think about adding other varieties of fish. Many people also add miniature turtles and other varieties of underwater creatures. You will need some advice to ensure you get the ones that are suitable for your fish. Because as you know under water animals are known to eat each other and you really dont want something that will gobble your pets up.

If you have never owned a fish before bear in mind, whilst they are relatively easy to look after they still need some care, albeit very little compared to other common pets. But remember a fish is for life and not just for Christmas!

If you’re buying a younger iguana, it’s important that he’s very energetic. An immature iguana that rarely moves around is in all likelihood sick. Older ones are usually less active, but can still be healthy.

It’s also a good idea to check for parasites. Mites are some of the most common parasites. You can check for an infestation by looking closely at the iguana’s scales. Mites will appear as small specks that are moving around.

Another common problem with iguana pets is dry gangrene. This condition causes symptoms such as blackened tail tips and toes. However, some iguanas naturally have black patterns, so you shouldn’t get this confused with dry gangrene.

The Bird Eye – An Organ Wild Animals Cannot Live Without

images5

The name “bird’s eye” has been given to many companies and mapping mechanisms. Who could forget Bird’s Eye vegetables? There are many applications that want you to make the connection between the bird eye and high quality products or software that can show map details for miles. The bird’s eye is a remark that is often tossed around when someone is referring to a high vantage spot that allows them to see the lay of the land for several miles. How much do we owe these wild animals?

Did you know that your eye and the bird’s eye have many of the same structural features? Both the human eye and the bird eye have a cornea, retina, iris, lens, anterior chamber and eyelids. Some of these structures function in the same way for both humans and wild birds/domesticated birds.

The obvious difference is the size of the eye in comparison to the rest of the body. A starling’s eye is 15% of their body mass, whereas a human’s eye is only 1%.

The size of the eye depends on the bird species. Owls, for example, have huge eyes that allow them to take in more at once. For a wild bird that is important because it means that they can spot enemies and their prey much easier. Owls cannot move their eyes so they rotate their heads.

How far do they rotate their heads? They rotate a whopping 200 degrees. Another difference to be found is the number of eyelids a bird has over humans. The human eye only has an upper and lower eyelid.

All species of birds have three eyelids. They have an upper, lower and a nictitating membrane that cleans and protects the eye. Another difference is in the positioning of the eyes.

Humans and most wild animals, especially predators, have eyes that are not as centralized as a bird’s eye. A bird’s eye is on the front of the skull and they lack the ability to see very far to the sides. This is why birds turn their heads often.

Human’s can get by without their eyesight. There are many devices and advancements in medical science that allow for humans to compensate for vision loss. Wild birds do not have this luxury.

If their eyesight is damaged, then they will undoubtedly starve or die without outside help from a conservation or rescue group. The bird eye may just be an organ but it is one that these two legged, winged wild animals cannot live without.

Become a Vet and Help Sick Animals Recover

images21

Vets, otherwise known as Veterinary Surgeons are physicians for animals, much like humans, animal have a wide range of ailments that need attending to. With the increase in the number of pet insurance policies taken out and also the amount people are prepared to spend on their cherished animals the demand and thus the financial reward for Vets has increased.

To become a veterinary surgeon it is important firstly that you have a passion for the welfare of animals. Although making a good living from becoming a vet should be a concern, it in most cases should not be the primary reason for becoming a vet. The skills required to become a vet are similar to those required by a paediatrician. Animals (the same as Children) cannot communicate their symptoms to you and therefore you will be relying on testimony from the owners as well as your own individual skill to asses and diagnose your patients and offer a suitable course of treatment.

If you wish to become a vet you will have to obtain a veterinary degree also known as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from a suitable establishment, plus in addition you must obtain a license to practice. Such a qualification will not only allow you to treat animals with standard complaints but also to specialise in animal healthcare niches. Obviously the rules and regulations for veterinary surgeons vary between countries, so be sure to check with your local licensing boards as part of your research on your path to become a vet.

Most people once qualified choose to treat domestic animals due to the fact that the demand here is always great and there are plenty of opportunities available for newly qualified vets. This is also a good route to take for those who, in the future, wish to open up their own veterinary surgery with other veterinary surgeons working for their practice.

It can take up to 8 years to obtain the qualifications to become a vet once leaving secondary education, moreover competition for places at Universities which offer degrees in Veterinary medicine is fierce, but for those who gain a place and graduate the rewards are great both in terms of job satisfaction and remuneration.

Feral Hogs To Be poster Pigs For Alleged Cruelty To Animals In Texas

images7

I need to stay on the subject of feral hogs this week to take note of the animal rights folks attempt to derail the Texas Department of Agricultures Get the Hog Outta Texas campaign. Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples recently announced a county grant program to control feral hogs, which are rapidly becoming Texas number one pest problem. Under the pretense of an effort to reduce cruelty to animals in Texas, some want to stop the program.

In a blog post title Hog Out is Out of Line on the Care2 blog, Staples was urged to consider more humane means of dealing with this porcine menace. Im sitting here scratching my head, trying to figure out what form that might take. Anyone out there know of a place we could keep 2 million wild hogs? How about petting zoos? No, scratch that, kids would lose fingers. Maybe a traditional zoo would work, though I cant imagine anyone wanting to view them in their natural habitat, which is about anywhere they want to be. They are too wild to be companion pigs, guard pigs, drug sniffing pigs or seeing-eye pigs. I cant come up with anything. Any help out there?

It will be interesting to see if feral hogs become poster pigs for the animal rights movements perceived notion of cruelty to animals in Texas. They are poor choice as a symbol for any movement, even one as misguided as this. These animals are ugly, mean, destructive, wild, and carry diseases with the potential to devastate wildlife and livestock populations. They have been known to attack people and cause traffic accidents. They are also very cunning.

I use the word cunning instead of smart. Dont misunderstand. They arent studying for algebra tests, but they are very adept at escaping detection and fleeing from efforts to control them. They are also, apparently, quite amorous. They breed like rabbits.

Controlling feral hogs is absolutely essential. The damage they do to agriculture and increasingly, many urban areas, is costly. Their occasional clashes with people can be dangerous. No method of reducing their numbers will be easy, but weve got to start somewhere.

Solutions are like noses. Everybody has one. I suspect this is one of those cases where its someone elses problem, so its really not that important.

I admit it. Im a people first kind of guy. This is not about cruelty to animals in Texas or anywhere else. This is about a serious problem with only one solution. It should be done as humanely as possible. But it has to be done.

Pets In The Classroom Program Exceeds First Year Expectations

images

The Pet Care Trust is pleased to announce that the Pets in the Classroom Program saw surprising growth in 2010. The program awarded 2,060 grants to teachers in 2010, its first full year of operation. With an average of 30 students per classroom, the program has brought pets into the lives of almost 62,000 children. Some of these children may have no other contact with a pet except in their classroom. In many cases, it could be the beginning of a lifelong interest in pets and pet care.

Pets in the Classroom is an educational grants program supporting responsible pet care for school classrooms. Sponsored by the Pet Care Trust, the goal of the program is to establish healthy child-pet relationships at an early age by supporting responsible pet care in Kindergarten-6th Grade classrooms across the U.S. and Canada. Many school teachers have very limited resources for the support of classroom animals. The Pet Care Trust sponsors this program to help teachers purchase or maintain pets in the classroom through direct, no-hassle grants. The program leaves it up to the teacher to select the pet that is most appropriate for her/his classroom. There have been a wide variety of funding requests, from snakes and lizards to guinea pigs and rabbits, proving that many different species provide interesting classroom companions.

As of December, 2010, 2,066 certificates were granted totaling nearly $264,000. . The programs initial goal for the year of 700 grant requests was far exceeded. Pets in the Classroom has funded the following classroom pet requests:

Aquariums- 761
Reptiles- 435
Small Animals- 737
Birds- 93
Sustaining- 40 (These grants help teachers who already have a classroom pet with food and supplies).

The program hopes to fund an additional 2,000 classroom grants in 2011. All funding for Pets in the Classroom has come from the Pet Care Trust endowment. As the program expands to reach more elementary school classrooms across the country, the program will rely on direct financial support from the pet industry. Pets in the Classroom welcomes support from corporate and individual donors through tax deductible contribution to the Pet Care Trust. Visit the Trust website today at www.petcartrust.org.
